Created in 2014 by Chelsey Baker, an award-winning business mentor, National Mentoring Day celebrates the contribution that mentoring makes and its impact. This year, we will be celebrating National Mentoring Day on Wednesday, 27th of October.

The Difference Between Coaching and Mentoring

The lines blur between coaching and mentoring with a lot of coaches. The two are, in fact, very distinct from each other. Coaching is about helping the client draw answers from within themselves by asking powerful questions. Mentoring, on the other hand, is about advising clients based on previous experience. For more information on the differences between the two, check out this blog post.

Mentoring plays an essential role in supporting individuals and businesses.

Experienced coaches and mentors will find they can easily step into each role in any given session. To simplify the two roles, which is a basic explanation; mentoring is directive, and coaching is exploratory.

As Head of CPD, I love talking about personal development, and I’m constantly searching for ways to develop my skills. I have worked with many mentors over the years, they have stretched and challenged me, without whom I would not have created my successful business or achieved half of what I have achieved.

Celebrate and Thank Your Mentors

As it is National Mentoring Day, spend a few moments considering which mentors have helped you over the years. It’s time to celebrate them. We all know how good we feel when someone gives us a shout out or messages us privately about how we’ve helped them. Mentor Week have this great article on how to celebrate.

Who could you reach out to and thank today?

Become an Accredited Mentor Yourself

If you want to become a professionally accredited mentor, now is the perfect time. Earlier this year, I decided to go for my combined coach & mentor accreditation with the IAPC&M. While my initial goal was to pass, I came away with so much more due to going through the process.

There are four steps to the accreditation process:

1. Evidence Portfolio

This stage of the process is where you collate evidence to support your application, i.e., provide copies of certificates, testimonials, mentoring hour logs etc.

2. Capability Interview

An interview with questions about your mentoring style and thoughts on mentoring, based on IAPC&M’s Capability matrix.

3. Skills Assessment

A mentoring session on a real-life topic area, followed by a constructive feedback session.

4. Reflection Piece

Complete a self-reflective form saying what worked well, what you will do better next time (it forms part of your ongoing CPD).

While the words ‘assessments and interview’ can be daunting, the process is rigorous for a reason. Once passed, you can proudly say that you have been assessed using the stringent accreditation process that IAPC&M use. Dawn and David on the accreditation team do everything they can to put you at ease. Your mentoring will be so much better due to being brave enough to commit to this, which at the start might feel like an arduous goal.

Following your assessment, you are given valuable, constructive feedback. The feedback alone is worth the price of going through the process of accreditation, in my opinion.

How fabulous will it be to end the year on a high by having achieved your Accredited Mentor status?

What a great way to kick of 2022 too!  In fact, to help you on your way, you are invited to join us in a one-day advanced mentoring skills workshop on the 6th of December.

You can achieve this combination status by:

1. attending a one-day IAPC&M accredited Level 3 certified mentor training day for £150 (saving you 50% off the normal cost of this online course), delivered by Stephen Hopkins, ASC/M, founder of Touchstone Development who will invoice you separately

This one-off special event in December will end what has been another incredible year of CPD and business-building opportunities, providing you with another fantastic return on investment for your annual renewal fee.
