For people who are auditory or have low vision, you can listen to this blog “How Will Coaching Help You Achieve Success?” HERE.
Everyone wants success. But stop for a moment and think about what that statement means. We are not all chasing this same thing called “success”. Surely, it’s many different things because we are all unique, with our own dreams and desires.
For example, after a football match that ends in a draw, one coach or team member might consider it a success, while another sees it as a disappointment. Success is not a one-size-fits-all concept. This makes it subjective rather than logic-based.
For some, the vast range of coaching books and tools available for little or no cost is enough to help them achieve their desired success. For others, knowing what they want and then making it happen is too high a mountain to climb alone.
Our quest for success may be influenced, tainted even, by external pressures: family, peer groups and work colleagues and, looking wider, the media. These influences may result in us losing sight of what is truly important to us.
Let’s explore how we can overcome this lack of clarity by working with a coach.
Aligning Your Goal with Your Vision
Living a life that is not aligned with our true desires, values and purpose – causes us (to varying degrees) anxiousness, stress, lack of fulfilment etc. This is what drives people to seek out the support of a coach.
Professionally trained, experienced and accredited coaches support clients in their quest for personal and professional development using an array of coaching tools and techniques. It’s the neutrality of the coaching conversation that is so empowering for coaching clients and allowing them to explore what they desire without any outside influence or pressure.
Coaches empower their clients first by ensuring they set goals which are truly aligned with their vision and values. For me, this quote sums it up:
“When you are in alignment with the desires of your heart, things have a way of working out” ~~Iyana Vanzant
And let’s not forget how coaches also support their clients by ensuring their goals are SMART (Specific Measurable, Achievable and Time-specific). And by offering that all-important ingredient “accountability”.
The Hidden Challenges of Success
Before we can celebrate success, we need to define what it means to us and consider both the positive and potential negative outcomes. Success can stretch us in unexpected ways.
It can stretch us in ways we hadn’t imagined, pushing us to grow but also testing our limits. It might lead to shifts in our relationships, demands on our time, or even changes in how we see ourselves. In some cases, it may bring pressure or create new expectations, both from ourselves and from others.
Without reflection, we risk being overwhelmed or losing sight of what truly matters to us.
Thus, as we pursue success, it’s crucial to be mindful of both the rewards and the potential costs. Understanding this balance allows us to embrace success with greater awareness and resilience, celebrating not only the destination but the journey that leads us there.
Questions That Lead to Success
So, here’s a challenge for you: if a client approached you, wanting to be successful in a particular area, what questions would you ask? Once you have your list of questions, answer them for yourself. What do your answers reveal, and where do they lead you?
Success, whatever it may mean to you, is worth celebrating. Just make sure you’ve stopped to think about not only what success is, but whether it’s the right path for you.
