Over the years, I’ve worn many hats—Team Manager, Project Leader, Head of Customer Excellence, Career Coach, Educator, Author, Speaker, and, currently, International President of the Organisation of Women in International Trade (OWIT). But no matter the title, one truth remains at the heart of my work:

🧭 People thrive when they feel seen, heard, and empowered.

This belief is the foundation of what I call the “coach approach”—a leadership mindset that goes beyond traditional management. Today, building high-performing teams requires more than direction. It calls for transformation. And that begins with coaching.

From Directive to Transformational: A Personal Shift

I still remember stepping into my first management role. I was eager, equipped with experience, and determined to lead. I came prepared with instructions, expectations, and structure.

But the silence in the room was deafening.

I realised later that it wasn’t the absence of ideas—it was the absence of invitation. I was operating with a directive mindset: leading from the front, issuing tasks, and expecting follow-through.

Everything shifted when I asked myself a new question:
“How can I support my team to move forward, rather than move them?”

From that moment, my team meetings became more dynamic. People engaged, offered creative solutions, and took ownership. They grew—and so did the outcomes.

The Coaching Mindset – A Game Changer for Leaders

The coaching mindset isn’t about being soft or avoiding decisions. It’s about cultivating curiosity, active listening, and genuine trust. It’s about leading with questions instead of commands, and creating a space where people feel safe to contribute.

In my work as a coach and capacity builder, here’s what I’ve observed when leaders embrace coaching skills:

  • Increased ownership – People feel more accountable and invested.
  • Stronger collaboration – Open communication becomes the norm.
  • Higher performance – Empowered teams innovate and adapt faster.

One client, a finance executive, told me:
“I didn’t realise I was standing in the way until I stopped managing and started coaching.”
By shifting her approach, she not only transformed her team’s results but also strengthened her leadership identity.

Practical Coaching Tools You Can Start Using Today

Whether you’re a team leader, business owner, or changemaker, here are coaching-inspired tools you can begin using now:

✅ Ask powerful questions – Use “What,” “Who,” and “How” questions to draw out ideas and reflection.
✅ Hold space – Give silence time to breathe. That’s where insight lives.
✅ Celebrate the process – Recognise effort and growth, not just outcomes.
✅ Focus on strengths – Build confidence by helping others recognise what they already do well.

Why Coaching Skills Are Essential for the Future of Work

We don’t just need more leaders—we need more coaching-minded leaders.

A coaching culture builds trust, inclusion, and resilience—especially vital in hybrid, diverse, and global teams. When employees feel heard and valued, they go from executing tasks to driving innovation.

And this is where professional coaching training and accreditation become critical.

As someone committed to the highest standards of coaching, I fully align with the values of the International Authority for Professional Coaching & Mentoring (IAPC&M). Their rigorous accreditation, focus on ethics, and emphasis on real-world skills help coaches—and leaders—stand out with integrity.

🗣️ Quote to Reflect On

“Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.”
